Leadership Fayette Class of 2025 Graduates, Poised to Lead Fayette County Forward

On June 1, 2025, the University of Tennessee Martin Somerville Center hosted the graduation ceremony for the Leadership Fayette Class of 2025. The event marked the culmination of a powerful year of civic learning, connection, and purpose for a group of committed individuals ready to help shape Fayette County’s future. Leadership Fayette is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, relationships, and perspective needed to lead effectively across sectors such as government, infrastructure, education, public health, and economic development. This year’s class embraced the journey, engaging deeply with key organizations, community leaders, and one another.
“Participating in Leadership Fayette was an eye-opening experience that deepened my understanding of our community’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities,” said graduate April Cleaves. “It was more than just a program—it was a journey of growth, connection, and purpose. It made me examine myself and realize that progress happens when people come together with intention, humility, and a shared commitment to making a difference.”
Dr. Tameka D. Lewis, a Class of 2025 graduate, called the program “transformative,” noting, “The two-fold experience allowed me to connect with diverse individuals who share a robust passion for the growth and development of Fayette County while simultaneously enriching my perspective on community needs and opening doors for future collaborations.”
Fellow graduate Andre Marshall shared a similar sentiment. “The Class of 2025 was amazing! The relationship between classmates and staff was phenomenal,” he said. “The tour experience of Fayette County was my favorite because I got to see places in the county I’ve never seen before. Overall, I was very satisfied with the experience.”
The program not only shaped its graduates but also allowed them to make a tangible difference. The Class of 2025 raised nearly $4,000 to invest back into the community. Their project supports the development of a Junior Leadership Fayette program for students, sponsors a local educator to attend WestTeach, and helps fund future Leadership Fayette programming as Title Sponsors. This forward-thinking initiative reflects the class’s commitment to sustainability, equity, and education. This is leadership in action.
Leadership Fayette Board member Cheryl Brown commended the class for their ability to work across differences. “The Class of 2025 represents a group from various backgrounds with strong opinions, yet they were willing and able to collaborate,” she said. “This success came from their willingness to actively listen and understand—even when they didn’t agree. The collective goal of giving back to Fayette County was more important than individual victories.”
Board member Lynn Palmer echoed that sentiment, stating, “The LF Class of 2025 embodies creativity, commitment to an objective, and inclusivity to many diverse views. They will be a true representation of a vibrant future for ALL of Fayette County.”
Rather than a traditional stage walk, each graduate was presented with a Leadership Fayette plaque, symbolizing their leadership journey and dedication.
Several special recognitions were presented during the ceremony:
· The Tom Karcher Award, honoring a current class member who demonstrates exceptional leadership by stepping forward and initiating positive change, was awarded to Nina Ingram.
· The John Wilder Award, presented annually to an alumnus who provides active support of Leadership Fayette and meaningful service to the community, was awarded to Elizabeth Smith.
· The Molly McCarley Future Leader Scholarships were awarded to Maddie Long, Levi Adair, and Ainsley McDaniel, recognizing their potential as emerging young leaders in Fayette County.
As the graduates look ahead—some taking on new leadership roles in local organizations—they leave Leadership Fayette equipped to serve, collaborate, and help Fayette County thrive for generations to come.
