Sharon Darsaw Puryear, a proud New Jersey native and longtime community advocate, passed away on July 2, 2025. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and love.
After more than 32 successful years owning and operating Western Transportation Inc.—a national trucking and brokerage company she built with her beloved husband, James H. Puryear III—Sharon briefly stepped into retirement. But her heart for service soon led her to a new chapter: one of tireless volunteerism and community engagement.
Sharon dedicated countless hours to causes that uplifted others, particularly through her work with the Women’s Advocacy Center. There, she trained others in the Lethality Assessment Program and taught impactful courses on Domestic Abuse, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Parenting. She was also a vital contributor to the Collaborative Community Response Team with the Collierville Police Department.
A certified life coach and speaker, Sharon amassed more than 200 hours of specialized training in trauma healing, mental health, and advocacy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Her efforts earned her recognition in INC. Magazine, the Memphis Tri-State Defender, and the Fayette Falcon.
Sharon’s impact was especially felt through her deep and unwavering involvement with Leadership Fayette. A graduate of the Class of 2019, she immediately stepped into a leadership role, serving on the board and as Treasurer. Her dedication was unmatched. Sharon was instrumental in bringing the powerful Tent City historical education program to Fayette County and worked tirelessly on the committee that oversaw its development. Her efforts were honored with the prestigious Wilder Award—a testament to her enduring influence.
Beyond her public service, Sharon's greatest joy was her family. She and James shared a blended family of five children (one of whom preceded her in death), eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy.
Sharon Darsaw Puryear will be remembered as a woman of action, compassion, and unshakable commitment. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift the community she served so faithfully.
